Debbie Susann Leavell was born, raised, and educated in Detroit, Michigan, but has deep roots in Rayville, Louisiana. She is a graduate of Wayne State University with degrees in Secondary English/Language Arts and Secondary Education Administration. It was on the banks of the Detroit River where Debbie was first inspired to write a poem, which began her long career of writing.
When she gave her life to Christ in October 1981 she learned that her inspiration to write was a Divine gift and has dedicated her gift to the ministry work of Christ.
Debbie and her husband, Pastor Joseph G. Leavell, Sr. teach the Family Life Clinic at The Better Covernant International Church in Detroit. She is a teacher in the Southfield Public School District. They have one son, Joseph G. Leavell, Jr. and reside in Farmington Hills, Michigan
